Each year, Sydney becomes a canvas for brilliant light installations and projections. Vivid Sydney attracts more than 2.3 million visitors and sees historic sites – including the Sydney Opera House, Customs House and Taronga Zoo Sydney – illuminated in brilliant colour. Now running for it’s 11th year, we will see a spectacular program which also includes big-ticket music performances, creative conferences, talks, and workshops.
Here’s all you need to know!
Where: Sydney, New South Wales
When: 24th May – 15th June 2019
Vivid Lights On: 6pm to 11pm nightly
How to get there
The best way to see Vivid Sydney is by foot and public transport. To see the centrepiece event: the lighting of the Opera House sails, catch the train to Sydney’s city stations, Wynyard or Martin Place, which are all a short walk to Circular Quay. For easy access to the other precincts and venues use public transport. Plan ahead with Vivid’s helpful transport information.
Attractions
With hundreds of displays scattered across more than a dozen precincts throughout Sydney, narrowing down just what to see and do during Vivid isn’t easy. Below we have highlighted of the absolute must see displays.
Austral Flora Ballet, Sydney Opera House
Watch the Sydney Opera House come to life with a unique Australian botanic display. The design, by Los Angeles artist Andrew Thomas Huang, draws on contemporary dance and motion-capture technology to light up the site with many floral favourites such as waratahs and kangaroo paws.
Under the Harbour, Customs House
An eerily beautiful under-the-sea kaleidoscope of colour, Under the Harbour showcases just some of the sea creatures living off Australia’s coastlines and is projected onto the facade of the 174-year-old Customs House building.
Pixar Animation Studios, The Argyle Cut
Featuring clips from Pixar favourites like Toy Story and Finding Nemo, this display celebrates 30 years of art and animation and is illuminated on the ceiling within the Argyle Cut.
Taronga Zoo
This year, the zoo’s display aims to shine a light on endangered animals with light sculptures of a Sumatran tiger and her cubs, a marine turtle, busy bees and a larger-than-life gorilla family.
Trumpet Flowers, 15 Victoria Avenue, Chatswood
A set of trumpet keys, that visitors will be able to play, are hidden amongst the 40 towering trumpet flowers in Chatswood. Between visitors’ melodies, scheduled animated musicals will play throughout the evening.
Music
Kate Miller-Heidke and Iain Grandage (May 29, 7:30pm-9:30pm, City Recital Hall)
