If there was one name that was entirely synonymous with campervans then it would be Westfalia. They’ve created some of the greatest campers of all time, from all generations of Volkswagen vans, but look what happens when they get their hands on a Ford Transit: the added space of a long wheelbase van has given them the freedom to create a spacious camper that sleeps four and seats five, and even manages to squeeze in a bathroom.

The Nugget PopTop edition is created using a MWB Ford Transit.

Possibly the best aspect of the Ford Nugget camper creation by Westfalia is its flexibility; the van is completely customizable based on your needs. Available versions are the PopTop, the HighTop and the Nugget Plus; the first two are medium wheelbase vans, the latter a long wheelbase which allows for the addition of a toilet, and all of which allow enough height for standing.

The base van, Europe’s beloved best-selling Ford Transit, features a 2.0L EcoBlue diesel engine delivering either 128bhp or 168bhp depending on your choice of model, and is available with either a six speed manual or automatic transmission. It comes with 16” wheels, a 4” touchscreen audio system, and all the modern safety features like cruise control, crosswind assist and emergency brake assist.

Westfalia have managed to squeeze five people and a shower into a Ford Transit van.

The surprisingly spacious interior is clean and modern with white surfaces, curved edges and light grey soft furnishings with a warm wood-effect floor. It features some very clever uses of space, enough to rival that of the most well-designed of tiny homes.

Despite its small size, the interior feels light and spacious.

The living and dining area is central to the design, featuring front swivel seats, a fold-down extendable table and three seater bench seat which converts into a double bed. The other bed is found in the roof space, and there is plenty of storage in the form of cupboards and a wardrobe integrated around the van.

The main bedroom lives in the pop top roof.

The L-shaped kitchen is compact yet sleek with curved edges, and contains a two-burner propane stove, 40L (10.6 gallon) fridge and a chrome-nickel tap and matching rounded sink. The height of the Ford Nugget Plus allows for upper storage cabinets as well as lower ones, and the fridge lives beneath a fold-up granite-effect countertop which doubles as a prepping area.

The kitchen’s L-shaped design gives the user more space to cook and store food.

At the rear of the larger of the vans, you’ll find a portable toilet stored away neatly inside a cabinet, and an outdoor shower affixed to the van’s rear door. This is fed by a 42L (11 gallon) fresh water tank, and there’s a 42L waste water tank to collect grey water. Heating is provided by a 3.5kW heater, powered by the van’s two 95Ah leisure batteries, and it comes with a 2.8kg gas supply equipped.

The Transit’s tailgate door allows for an outdoor shower.

Westfalia have yet to release prices for their three Ford Nugget camper vans, but they have been proudly on display at the Brussels Motor Show in Belgium.

One thing’s for sure, though; the Ford Transit, the backbone of Europe, is only growing in popularity, and Westfalia are jumping right on trend with their trio of ultra practical, space-saving campervans to suit a family of any size.
